Hello

I managed to literally break my 1.8T gearbox :(
And now i need to change it. I am wondering if the 1.8T and Proton 4G93 DOHC gearboxes are interchangeable?

I have this info:
GSR
Type Manual
Model W5M33
Gear ratios
5 Speed
1st 2.916
2nd 1.684
3rd 1.115
4th 0.833
5th 0.666
Reverse 3.166
Primary reduction 1.680
Transfer gear 1.090
Final drive gear
- front 2.936
- rear 4.525

Proton (model number of gearbox dunno la)
1st 3.083
2nd 1.947
3rd 1.285
4th 0.939
5th 0.777
reverse 3.083

Will I damage the engine if i use the std gearbox instead of W5M33?
What is the impact of using the proton one?

Hope some of u can help....

tks
terence

fren,

As for the standard 1.8 wira gearbox, it can't handle the torque of a turbo motor so if you install it, you're looking for trouble.the gears will shear and break...

Technically the F5M22 gearbox on the Proton does not have sufficient strength to withstand the torque of a 93T and will break. However, there are people who have used the Proton gearbox for years without having any issues and there are those who don't even last 6 months. It all boils down to how you drive your car and how much mods you've got..

It's not the gearbox which determines the fuel economy or how the car drives. It's the individual gear ratios including the final drive that affects. Can't comments without looking at the power curve of a VR4 vs the 1.3 gearbox.

Anyway I wouldn't recommend the 1.3 gearbox even if the gear ratios were optimal..

llsaw,

my fren with VR4 1.3 gearbox said that his car pick up better then the stock VR4 gearbox and top speed also not really affected cos he can go up to 200km/h
any time he wanted to...

that mean, we should use back the ori one then? how about the 4WD one? what happen if we lock it?

guys,
i am driving a putra with a gsr engine (standard). I am not sure about what gear box the car is running, i think it is the original gsr gearbox because i bought the 1/2 car (gsr) from a 1/2 car dealer in kl.
At 110km/h in 5th gear, the rpm reads 3,600rpm. If i am not mistaken the standard putra / GTi gearbox has a higher ratio (lower rpm at 110km/h). Can anybody confirm this.

GSR gearbox combined with it's overall ratio ends up like the Putra gearbox on 5th gear. 110km/h should be the same as the Putra at around 3100-3200RPM. If you are reading 3600RPM on 5th gear, there is a possibility that they have swapped your gearbox (or that your tacho is screwed). 3600RPM on 5th gear sounds like a 1.3 gearbox to me...

You can always jack your car up and check the gearbox (if you can't find the gearbox number which is located on top of the clutch housing). It is very easy to spot a 4WD gearbox as there's the protruding shaft that drives the rear diff.
