>it depends on where you are..have you own one yet? i can tell you what i
>know..
Fazrul, I'm in KL. Don't own one yet, but second hand prices of '94-'95
2nd Phase 19RTs have led me to seriously consider getting one as the
family's second car.
Would appreciate if you could shed some light on the following:
1) Where do you service your 19RT? How much do they charge?
2) What typically goes wrong with this car? Does it 'act up' like Italian
cars?
3) Is the autobox really that disaster-prone?
4) What problems should I watch out for when looking at a '94 19RT?

checked my haynes manual, it didn't tell how to check the condition of the
mounting... it only gave guides to renew the mounting.... one of it
includes to dismantle the lower protective cover... so i guess you should
at least get rid of the bottom cover to have a look.... looking from top
would be rather difficult since the engine is quite compact and filled-
up..... what model is yrs?? mine was a F3N engine.....
ok... y not like this.... will you have the wiper plus the mounting at say
rm50?? that's the most i can offer.....
zzrpilot:
will try to answer some of your questions from my experiences:
1. the renee 19 can be serviced at any reputable workshop really.... oil
filter will typically cost around rm25.... can get cheaper if you buy
outside yourself..... service interval is 10k km and it is recommended to
change the engine sump washer at every service interval.... quality
mineral oil would suffice.... it will take 5.3 litres... therefore,
servicing cost all in would be slightly less than rm100...
2. through out my experience the car has never broken down by the road
side before... preventive maintenance is the key to it.... electronics
have never failed although there was one time that i kena lock-out because
of my auto-lock feature.. but that was my own carelessness..... however,
parts can be quite expensive.... and sometimes can be quite hard to find,
as i know not many shops stock spare parts for this model... unless you go
back to quasar... but i feel that ppl at quasar are not keen on this model
and therefore the work really is quite shoddy.... but they might have
improved though....
3. the autobox is not that disastrous!! it's built to give you continuous
service if you maintain it properly.... no auto gear box can withstand
abuse really.... look at proton 1.5/1.6 and tell me if there's a
difference??
4. typically, oil leakage could be quite prevalent... check the engine
sump, power steering column and auto gear box for leakage.... check the
interior if it's still in mint condition as that will generally summarize
the care given by the owner..... check all electrical gauges work
(particularly the oil level indicator) and all electrical devices are
working..... have a test drive and see if there is any peculiar sound or
movement.... basic tips for scrutinizing second hand cars apply here as
well.....
one thing though, the sound of the engine will be quite rough compared to
japanese cars but this is perfectly normal!!!
do enjoy the car if you get one.... it is quite a fun car when thrown
about corners......

i've been to quasar klang, quasar in jalan sultan ismail and quasar in
pj.... all i can say is i was not at all satisfied with their service
quality bearing in mind that they carry the renault franchise!!!
i've also been to the authorised service centre in alor setar.... among
the four i would rate them in order of professionalism:
1. alor setar, 2. jalan sultan ismail, 3. klang & 4. petaling jaya (this
place sucks big time!!!)
contact person: alor setar - fidel, jalan sultan ismail - jeff tan,
klang - nathan, petaling jaya - two young chaps - goh & hoe....
like what i mentioned in my earlier post.... these quasar ppl are not keen
on this model!!! well.... it was brought in by federal auto.... but too
bad the after sales service available now has seriously affected the users
of this car!!!
anyway... to answer your question, i'm in the klang valley.... office in
pj in particular......

but the mechanic who did my car is quite good though..at least when he do
my car.. i think during your time, your car probably was their learning
experiment..so they screw up few cars..but gain in learning curve..coz
they troubleshoot very fast..maybe coz they been playing around with same
model that encounter similar problem so they know already lar..i used to
have problem with my steering, send it to 2-3 workshop/tireshop..all say
diff2 things. send it to quasar, staightaway know the problem, cost me 80
bucks only...but sometimes they do potong kepara lah..
and this is to zzr..others i hope will agree with me..
i gather this info either from my own experience, my r19 friends, and also
my mechanic friend used to work in quasar and federal auto
to me, for normal servicing, i go to quasar..coz some outside workshop
dont have that tools to bukak the sump punyer skru(lubang 3 segi)..plus
they may not replace the washer..lagipun for most common parts like oil
filter, air filter, are cheaper than outside workshop..then they do
inspection somemore..so can get info on whats need to be replaced or whats
wrong with the car..i always ask quasar to troubleshoot then ask quotation
if too expensive, i do outside..most workshop can do the job but quasar
troubleshoot better..
for timing belt, i send quasar too..(not worth the risk) -the full kit
(with bearing) is about rm250, labour rm112. quite ok lar..
things like brakepad, i buy from sparepart shop..cheaper..
secara keseluruhan, quasar do the job better but labour abit expensive..
sending outside workshop are cheaper but risky..kadang2 lebih merosakkan
kereta..so have to find workshop yang biasa buat continental..becareful
not to send to any workshop esp jap car wshop..they'll lecture you..(kete
susah-lah, parts mahal lah)
but some parts like starter, alternator, compressor..the kinds that can
get reconded ones, better buy them as they are cheap yet good as new..
wear and tear parts i get new ones..
parts that cant be repaired and brand new too expesive, get potong from
rijoda..if you do a partprice survey, most new parts are ok..only someof
them like bodyparts better get potong...but i think any cars are like
that..
for models, what quasar foremen told me, the 2nd phase is better..and 1.8
version is less trouble than the 1.7...for auto, dont send to
quasar..they'll quote you like nobodys business..
better send to those specialised auto gearbox shops...better
worksmanship..you can find them at motortrader..to overhaul the gearbox
will cost around 3-4k..and sometimes you dont need to overhaul.. coz they
can troubleshoot first..
