Hi everyone! I'm posting in this forum to seek AW members' opinions.
Any feedback is much appreciated

I'm thinking of buying a used saloon for around RM10-20k and I've
narrowed it down to Merc 123 and Volvo 240. Can anybody tell me the pros
and cons of owning these cars?

Oh, and if anyone out there is familiar with the Rover 800, I would
appreciate any info on this car as well.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, agree with wglee. GZo for Merc 123, easy to maintain. Don't touch
that VOlvo ever, you will die from owning it. Trust me, speaking from
experience. The 123 travels nicer than a Volvo anytime, built quality is
better too.

Ya Merc maybe better but a 20+ yr old car has great build quality,
you must be joking also it has a horrendous rust problem so be
careful when buying one.
Rover 800 don't touch unless given free coz almost no parts available.
Volvo 240 ride cannot match Merc but it is a tough car and
has less rust problem and easier to repair and cheaper than Merc.

Go look for a 240 Turbo great looking car. Also can convert to
Jap turbo engine easily can go drifting..

Hello Citroking,
240 is famous for rust at floor board and wheel arch. Go check out
yourself if you have not owned one before. Spare parts suck high too.

scenic, i agreed with u.
Also, 240 even powered by jap turbo-engine can only do drifting in reverse.

W 123 at yr 84--87? at rm 20k or below..

u can consider a 1997 peugeot, 405SRi,manual.

a--ten years less on car age,
b--fuel injx,
c--french car ride & handling,
d--tough body shell.

down side--
a--parts costly,
b--not many mechanics "GOOD" at fixing them.

a 1997 W124 E220 costs >>rm 65k ?, more than x4 the price.

Yes I owned a 240 many years ago and it was a real good car
but yes suspension was wallowy but it was hardy if taken
good care of...

Rust at floor board not becoz of car design but becoz of aircond not
serviced cooloing coil dirty and starts to overflow water onto floor
and if not looked into will cause corrosion...so whose fault is it..

Sure sign is to just lift floor mat and see wet stains under..
then attend to it immediately sure got no rust problem...

Merc 123 worse at floor board even structure has rusted so be extremely
careful when buying one check it thoroughly..

Price wise 240 much cheaper than 123 less than half the price got more
money to spend on upgrades..
spend on upgrades...

Volvo owners got 'Million Mile Club' in Europe. A lot of these old fuggers
really last a million miles and they're still going strong. They don't
call the 240s 'Bricks' for no reason.

But I doubt today's newfangled electronic-everything Volvos can last a
million miles like the old Bricks, though.

The only thing that put me off Volvos is the fuel consumption. What with
the petrol price hikes and all. But they're tough as nails. Timing belt
putus also, the engine can tahan.

Thanks for the feedback everybody.

I haven’t really decided, although I’m definitely not taking the Rover
800 I was considering earlier.

No offence to fans of French cars, but I won’t even consider anything the
frogs make after the nightmare I went through with a Renault 19.

Between 240 or 123, I guess it’ll come down to the conditions of the
specific cars I’ll be looking at in the next few weeks. I’ll be sure to
check the floorboards, wheel arches and the like for signs of rust.

If anyone here has a 240 or 123 there they would like to pass on, here’s
a chance to make a quick sale. Just drop a message for me at
iwan.dani@gmail.com.

Thanks again everyone.
