Hi citronking,

Yes, Toranas were great torquey cars, the 2 door ones were all 2.8L/3.0L
186S block and full of endless grunt. I had 3 units in my house in the
early 80s. I used to race these standard engined Toranas with souped up
jap cars on the Highways which were pretty empty after 2am, and no way
could the Japs come even close to smell the Torana's exhaust smoke. Then
had extractors and twin-barrel carbs fitted with Yella-Terra Heads
and ...... mind-boggling performance!!!!

BAL3056 is my nick, and my first Holden Premier GTS I owned from my Dad
again in the 80s. It was a 4-door Sedan with GTS power, it was diamond
red with chrome wire-wheels with a 5.7L V8. Later in the 90s couldn't
tahan the r/tax and had Jap engine fitted, which was the saddest day and
ultimate death of the car which I had in the family (1 owner) for 25
years. The car is now an empty shell lying outside KL. Perhaps one day I
might just pick it up for restoration and to create history by coming
back to my family after 32 years now... well, busy with my Holden
Statesmans now.

As a matter of fact, it is very easy to own Holdens. Parts are plentiful
in Australia and the roadtax is also cheaper now only 20% of the original
amount but you need to apply for the Certificate of Classic Car
Authenticity from JPJ, Putrajaya.

funny having a passion for holden....most of thier cars are from european
countries or based on US designs.....just rebadge it to Holden....the
quality on these cars are just as bad as proton.....i have seen a few
people even Label thier cars across with a big label saying....This is a
42,000 dollar lemon. Now its among the worse cars to buy.....you lose half
the value of the car in 3 years....say you bought at 40k aud....after few
years driving its 20k already....and as the mechanics say....the engine
design is really lousy and hard to fix....

no pain actually.....just stating the facts for the current crop of
holdens....maybe the older holdens were very good (for thier time) compared
to ones now currently in the market (with the competition in the market)

no offence anyway....i just think they should stop rebadging other peoples
car and make thier own........but at least the rebadged ones earn better
build quality than the locally produced holden commodores.....they have a
good reputation on tv commercials and beer drinking aussies.....but when it
comes to true performance, value or reliability.....thinks go abit awry....

SexyThang,

You're overly theoretical. By watching or reading 'TopGear' doesn't make
you a person with great knowledge and expert in cars. I can see your
weakness here ... too much garbage you read or see. You should own and
drive a car that suits your personal taste, not what so and so said.

I have read numerous books about how bad a BMW (I own one 5 series) is
today in terms of maintenace costs compared to the 80s. (Unlike you, I
don't read books/see TV to see how good they are, i buy them to get the
real feel). They are guaranteed to fall in quality once they're produced
in China and Thailand, worst still China. Mercedes interior parts today
look and feel like cheap plastics. Jaguar needs to be saved. Fiat
buying/taking over most European makes, but in deep financial trouble.
Nissan went downhill and Renault had to save it from death. Here I'm
talking about top notch cars.

So you see, in reality every make has it's setbacks. I love Holdens,
Chevys, Fords, Pontiacs etc, the older generation ones but truly, I would
never buy the newer models which are equally plagued with Jap-look-alike
designs, bad quality fittings etc.

My opinion is based on knowledge and expertise I've gained over 30 years.
I rest my case.

Cherio!!
