Hi,

Recently I went to a used car dealer in Shah Alam. Overthere I found this
cool (looks brand new) secondhand Scenic. Yr2000, selling for RM63k and
mileage 65000km.

In other forum, I mentioned that Im a s_u_c_k_e_r for SUV/MPV/4WD thus it
is no wonder that this car interested me.

So, Im hopin that any Scenic experts out here can provide me with their
two cents view on this car.

Amongst other things, how is the car performance, is it a good buy, what
about the maintenance cost, is it easy to find spare parts and so on.

Tq.

Check the gear box first. They are like cancer.

If you're looking for a Scenic, avoid the auto transmission. Unless, if
you get a used unit from Quasar Carriage or TC Eurokars, which comes with
a certain warranty period, then you are probably safer.

Avoid the used car dealers. If you still like the car, I suggest you get
a manual one instead.

Ok... interesting. Will remember that each time i visited a used car.

Btw, do you know how much cheaper is the manual version. Especially for
Yr2000 version. TQ

I was a Scenic owner from 1998 to 2004, manual 8V model. Third year into
ownership, the ECU just konked out like that. Cost me RM1750 to get it
replaced. 1997/98 model comes with manual. Other than that were all auto.
Automatic gearbox from Renault is very problematic. All the owners that I
gotten to know them during the seven years of Renault ownershipn none went
back for second Renault car after that. Reliability is a big issue. Was
told that the gearbox problem only tropicalised here in 2002 as told by
salesman but don't know how true is it. Look at Singapore Renault car
ownerships with the Megane II, problem still there with reliabilty.

One problem leads to another. Unless you've a lot of disposal income in
hand for repairs then get one which is fairly good.

2yrs hv gone by since the last posting of this article.

Any updates of the gearbox (especially automatic)? Meanwhile, has
Scenic "manual transmission" models mutated into cancers too , or manual
is serving strong?

Considering of buying a 97/98 Scenic which is averaging RM30k now. But
reading your posting still give goose bumps. How risky is risky for a
7~8yr old Manual transmission Scenic?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, for me not much problem for 97/98 scenic auto gear box, the problem
only appear in 2002 version.
I hv 1 Scenic year '98, automatic gear to let go, which the price is very
cheap now, I planning to let go with 27k. Anyone interested just contact
me. :)
