My gearbox died last night. Happened within 10 minutes... first, slips
during gear changes, then refuses to change gears... even when it does,
there's a 1-2 second lapse between gear changes, leaving the car in free
rev mode in between.
At last, when I stopped at a traffic light, it couldn't engage any gears
when the lights turned green. That was it. Had to tow the car back to my
house.
Have to tow the car to the workshop tomorrow morning and see what's the
financial damage. Hee hee... btw, it's a '97 Xantia 2.0i auto... 154K+ km
on the speedo.

I happened to me 2 years ago. changed a secondhand gearbox. cost more
than 4k. if you are lucky, it is not the gearbox, but the clucth, gives
you the same problem. but also pricey, around 2k.
by the way, which workshop are you going?

Basically to overhaul your gearbox (not change to a second hand one) will
cost around 3K+ but below 4K. I did mine at Surjit one year or so ago.
Another option is to buy a second hand recon gearbox and fit it in. Also
possible but check the prices.

exactly, come to think of it, there's a guy with a 405, wishing to ditch
his auto for a manual tranny.

i guess that the only problem is that the guy is in kepala batas, kedah...
on the other hand, why not settle for a manual??? P O W E R O N T A P!!!

rfbu,
"power on tap" simply means you tell your gear box what to do (i.e manual)
and not otherwise like the auto where it tell you what it thinks should be
done.

Thanks a lot for the offers! It's confirmed that the gearbox has to be
changed... earlier diagnostics by the mechanic suggested maybe only the
valve body needed to be replaced but then after dismantling the gearbox,
he found that the condition's quite bad.
The price he quoted me for a reconditioned gearbox is RM3.3K including
labour and stuff. It's in the process of being replaced now... should be
ready in a few days.
Bugger... now I have to keep the car. No point selling it after fixing it
up so much hehehe

Before your gearbox died, maintenancewise did you regularly (say every
10,000 km) change the gearbox oil, and filter as well?.
