the air filter is nothing but a waste of money. Unless of course you can
find a stock-standard replacement to just fit in instead of those
mushrooms.
Gosh, if u buy something like a BMW, just use it stock standard or go for
recommended accessories, not ah-bengs modifications.

replacement air filters (not a small dirty workshop in a slum of KL). But
I am still disappointed my cars worked better with the stock air filters

K&N is ah beng?.....FYI K&N filters are one of the best air filters in the
world in terms of particle filteration and power increase....this data is
dyno tested and thoroughly tested many times over.......its that good that
even DINAN uses K&N filters as part of its cold air intake system for 3
series.....check out www.dinanbmw.com and read the dyno figures before u
go around telling ppl K&N is an ah beng performance part.....heres another
site to backup my statements....
http://www.mkiv.com/...filters_test/2/ .....i hope u change your
point of view......notice that the power tests are specifically for
japanese cars, but the filteration is universal(i.e all cars)
zoomzoom88,
maybe u should try using K&N cone together with a good air ram(ie
stainless steel or carbon fibre) if u want to get noticible results....i
believe speedwords has the full kit and dyno figures to show.....hope this
helps......
desmondteo,
the above should convince u that K&N isnt what u call ah beng....in
reality far from that......try getting a good quality air ram , heat
shield and K&N cone filter for ur car......power is definately
noticible.....good luck with ur modifications.....

K&N filters are somewhere inside my warehouse rotting away. My father has
a similar experience with his Nissan Cedric V6 using a HKS air filter.....
worse acceleration and poorer fuel consumption. I think sticking to
factory air filters is best.
p.s. I don't want to install cone filters becos here in Hongkong the
police are very strict about modifications to any part of the car.
Normally the cops don't catch drivers for mod's but now the HK gov't is
very poor so they are now carrying out stricter enforcements and more road
blocks

Incidentally someone also raised same question on 6th Aug CBT issue in NST
with Daddy Fix-it.
1. IMO, it is all dependent on expectation. If the filter raise 1 horse to
your 50 hp under ther hood, then the differnce can be felt and you will
surely swear by the product. But if you already have 200 hp, 300 hp under
ther hood, that 1 horseshit, will not mean very much.
2. Reputable companies, such as BMW, spends millions on reserch - to get
to the point where they are now. If a product is cost effective, I am very
sure that they will spec it in their car.
3. K&N is an off the shelf product that is generic to all marques. Unless
you know what is the allowable pariculate size within the combustion
chamber, it is safer to stick with OEM brand. What is the allowable micron
for BMW engines?
4. Lastly, has a few friends, including one staff, that put the filter on
his Alfa. The feedback is that it is not a hoot of difference. So, why
bother. In this case, he is much younger and ca splurge with his sweat
cash to try. I prefer to keep the cash and upgrade to something ge?inely
give me real power.

now and do some minor mods when I am truly not happy with the cars
performance lar.

i agree that the power feel using performance filters are more noticible
on a lower hp car, but if u've read the articles i posted earlier, the
tests conducted are done on supras that exceed 250hp....and still the
dynos and tests show noticible results......like i said earlier, if K&N
wasnt that good, DINAN would not have used it as part of its cold air
intake configuration.....
its also true that when u have 200 horses under ur bonnet an increase of 2-
5 horses feels like horseshit......but then this horseshit is an important
factor in deciding the outcome of a track race or a drag when u need the
pull from extra amount of air your K&N/HKS filter can deliver to your
chambers......i can testify to that.......for car enthusiats who need to
extract the most they can from their engines, performance air filter are
not an option, it is a neccesity........thats why performance filters are
used in ALL major races whether offroad or on track......
.....btw, i drive a 1.5 city and a e36 325i.....FYI,i use a combo of K&N
on weekdays and HKS on weekends for the honda....for the beemer im using
K&N.....i am currently lookin for a carbon fibre cold air intake which
will further boost the mixture of cold air into my M50's chambers thus
giving me more power......IMHO im happy with the extra horseshit i can
extract from my M50 .....cheers to all!
