Hi all Sonata owners. Have been driving around my new Sonata for about 3
weeks now. Just want to compare some notes
1) For every RM60.00 on Fuel I get about 375KM is this normal?
2) How is the service centre at KAH Bintang like? Any better than proton?
3) You guys have any problems with the AutoCruise? Mine does not work and
have to wait for a replacement from AudioVox.
4) Any other useful tips that I should take note of.

Other than that, its a damn cool car and I am very happy with it.

Welcome nglenn. It's rare to find Sonata owners posting in AW nowdays.Big Smile

1) Definitely not, but then it's still new. Fuel consumption will get
better with more mileage. I assume you are using this for mainly city
driving with lots of traffic.
2) It's better than Proton, but the best in terms of cust. service and
technical knowledge is the SC in Jln. Ipoh
3) Mine did not come with Autocruise. Replacement should be under
warranty, therefore shouldn't be a problem.
4) Enjoy and have fun driving it Wink

Agreed, YoungWah.
-The Service Center is definately better, been to 222 and Jln Ipoh, was
please with the service.
-Mileage is not too impressive, on Highway, you could get 10-11KM/L.
combine is 9KM/L. the figure i collected so far (after having the car for
a month and half). But i guess you are right, it could get better over
time.
-Overall, this is a superb car. good handling, well managed NVM.
-one complain, the location of the reverse sensor LCD panel is on the
lower right aircon vent, which no body would look at when reversing a car,
unless you want to trust 100% on the sensor.

My Sonata is about 1.5 years old. Mileage on the highway is about 11-
12km/l because my speed is always around 140-150km/h. Average fuel
consumption for city driving is about 9.7 km/l.

My car doesn't have a LCD for reverse sensor, just the traditional beeping
sounds to warn you. Frown

Hey guys,
Thanks a bunch for the feedback. So based on RM60 for 375KM, I am getting
about 8.5KM/L. Is my calculation correct? If this is so, I am getting very
much lower mileage from you guys and I travel on the Kesas highway to work
everyday (except when I get stuck in the Jam at Tasik Selatan). How much
(KM) do you guys get with a full thank? When can I expect the consumption
to improve? After 10,000KM?
I think the LCD for the reverse sensors was one of the innovatice
ergonomics that the Hyundai Engineers put in to cater for the hearing
impaired people. I hardly look at it. Too used to the beeping sound and
looking at the back.
Besides that, I agree that it is a wonderfull car. Value for Money for
Sure. And thanks for the tip to use the SC at Jalan Ipoh. Will do that at
the next service.

Have another question for you guys. How do you guys keep track of such
accurate fuel consumption for you cars? What I do is that I normally fill
up RM60 (trip the trip meter) and see how many KM it gives me before the
fuel warning light appears which is usually after 375KM. Is there a better
method?

I don't think there's is an accurate way to calculate fuel consumption, at
least not for normal users like us anyway. Furthermore, driving conditions
change, traffic congestion changes, your driving style may be different,
air may be cooler/hotter, etc. What I do is do a full-tank fill-up, and
use it until fuel warning light comes on, and do another full-tank fill-up.

My Sonata, bought in April 2002 with 30,000km consumes RM37 for a non
stop journey from Damansara Utama to the second link Singapore causeway -
a journey of 355 km. One passenger, aircond blower at No 2. Average
speed at 105 kmh. Tyre inflation as per recommendation. Day time
driving.Fully synthetic oil since day one - 10-60W
Basically, an old man's car - takes its own sweet time to gain speed.
Tuned for comfort rather than handling. Capable of cruising 120kmh all
day long. Only 6 inches shorter than Ssang Yong Chairman

Hi,

Glad to see some active threads on Sonata again. I myself just bought a
2nd hand (6-mth old) Sonata last week and have been driving it for a few
days now. Totally agree with you all, Sonata is a wonderful and
pleasurable family car to drive, unless you are into sporty fast cars. A
bit larger than my old Perdana, so a bit harder to manuever around tight
corners, but much roomier inside.

I have some questions on the SC:
1. Has anyone tried using authorized service center besides KB (like Jimin
Auto in Sunway)? Apparently they can send someone to pick up your car from
office for service and then send it back to you. Convenient!

2. I called both Ipoh Rd and 222 SC's. At Ipoh Rd SC, it's on 1st come 1st
serve basis, they said if u come early in the morning for normal service,
wait is usually 1-2hrs. At 222, you have to make a booking, and the wait
is half a day! As I stay in Subang Jaya, I prefer to go to 222 SC, but
after hearing your comments abt better service at Ipoh Rd, I might change
my mind.

3. Engine motor oil used. SC informed that I can only use semi-synthetic
oil, cost is RM80. Cannot use normal oil as engine is DOHC, otherwise need
to change oil every 3000km. Anyone know what brand of oil they use and
does anyone buy/bring their own preferred brand?

4. There is 2 types of service. Economy for RM20 (labour charge) for quick
oil change. Then there is standard for RM65 (labour) which includes engine
tuning and check of brake pads, etc. Any difference btw the 2 that you
notice?

My Sonata is dark blue, and get dirty easily. Scrathes are also easily
more visible. I intend to send it for a professional wax/polish job that
will protect the paintwork. Any recommendations from you guys?

Heard the new 2.4L Sonata will be launched very soon. Wonder what the
price will be, have heard it may be 125K - 135K, and even Sonata 2.0L
price will drop. Nothing confirmed yet.

Hi btlim888, Nice to see you posting again.

1) Never tried authorised SC before. Wow, if they offer to collect your
car and then send it back then it`s definitely convenient.

3) You can actually use Fully Synthetic and prolong service intervals to
10,000km. I have checked this with the Jln. Ipoh SC. Jln Ipoh SC uses
Castrol whereas Jln 222 uses Shell.

4) Hmmm...never tried the economy service before.

Actually the dark blue and black (seen in S`pore and other countries) are
the best looking but as you say, need to clean and maintain more. That`s
why I chose Silver. I am actually in Beijing now and I actually see a lot
of Sonatas on the road. Of course, the most cars in Beijing are VWs and
Citroens.

I won`t be surprised if the price drops, especially with the current trend
started by Honda and Toyota.
