Last time after the technician changed the bearing and tested the
alternator, he asked me to change the whole unit since the Cut-out was
faulty and that part cost about the same as the rebuilt unit. I did that
and it is o.k. until now. May be by the time the bearing was damaged the
other parts are also about to go.

i think what he meant by the cut-out is the part called IC REG which is IC
regulator..yes indeed cost around 90-100 depends on model...i'd experienced
this before because i got a friend who send his alternator to me for repair
but then after some check with the multimeter, found out the cut out at
fault..then ask for some quotation from the wiring shop,i got that price..

i only found 1 alternator with that kind of faulty since i do this kind of
DIY tho..i think it's an isolated case..usually bearing and carbon brush
gave way..

i'm not very sure of that coz i'm not familiar to shop with those models
when i'm at the chop shop..have u ever try other shop..sometimes only
certain shop that don't have the parts will give u this kind of excuse..a
strategy so that u would stick to his shop..go to another shop..might
help u..

to thread owner,if u want some pics, pls let me know..i'll post the
link...might not the same with ur alternator model as it is from the
aircraft but it's just a guidance..esp on the tiny hole i mention
earlier..

No need chop shop for alternators. Most probably can get from re-cond shop,
like air-cond compressor...........

yes, that's another option of course..but when pointing to recond one,i
better not to choose the cheap one..sometimes a more expensive recond unit
will fail u in no time..didn't mean to scare u but in my case and my
friend's case,they can fail u in a single week..or maybe a single month

Chop shop mostly no warranty. Re-cond shop (depends) sometimes one month
warranty.
The last re-cond unit I used was on my SA-6Y Accord many years ago.
Alternator died on the way up to Taiping for New year. Luckily, there was
one shop who was open on the 3rd. day and had my model and the best part
was I use the lternator until I sold my car......

nice..not saying all reconds are crap...i have found several reconders
came to the scrap compound looking for alternator, starter motors, clutch
plate, and compressors..some of the parts u don't might even wanna look
at it..but recond sure are good at making the best appearance..sprayed in
a new silver color for alternator..look even shinier and brighter than
new original one..

that's why i like doing my stuff myself..so that i know i made a
replacement with a high quality parts..compresoor gaskets,compressor
shaft seals, alternator carbon brush, bearings and so many small parts i
bought myself..

for compressors,SANDEN SD507 fitted in G11 Charade...cost me around RM 50
for shaft seals and gasket replacement (including 1 large o-ring)..serve
me well until i gave the car to my grand dad..almost 3 years now..love
the original look..not the over make up one like recond..all parts are
japan made..

so i'm not a kind of recond item bashers..it's just that sometimes i had
a bad expression on those thing..becoz of a few bad experience..

regards also..

Yes, I understand what you mean. It is true as some recond shop don't do
the actual full recond of the internal parts. They just beautifies the
outside and sell as recond.

i know this topic is almost 1 year old but am wondering if someone could share some photos on how to remove the alternator right from its engine frame mounting to its casings in order to renew the carbon brush....

moreover, could anyone let us know on where to purchase the Bosch carbon brush for our Denso alternators?...many thanks.... trink39.gif
