RPM limiter...

To All Honda Sifus..

As I am driving a 15 years old Accord (auto), and sometimes can not
resist to press pedal hard, I afraid that one day very soon my engine
will go burst, is it possible to install RPM limiter? so that the engine
acceleration will stop at, say 5500rpm and will change gear if I press
hard?

my 87 prelude has an electronic cut-out at about 7000rpm. It's quite happy
to bang off the rev limiter all day long if needed. I'll assume an accord
will have a similiar cut-out.

Interesting to know that 7000rpm is the cut off.. however, I think
prelude is having a more superior engine than mine, including gearbox..
my old auto accord ca3 might not be able to handle frequent hard driving
for more than 6000rpm.. so, even my accord has that similar feature, it
will die soon...

If got such feature, do you think the mechanic can reduce the original
set 7000rpm limit down to 6000rpm? and where is it located?

Hmm... good question...

I'm going to guess here, but the cut off is electronic. It'll simply cut
fuel off when the RPM reaches a certain preset. So I'll say it'll be
difficult to adjust the limit.

Sidenote, the electronic cutoff is not idiot proof however. Drive fast
enough, reach redline, force the transmission into a lower gear, and the
car/gearbox will drag the engine happily way pass the redline into the
grenade zone.

BTW... my old manager was kind enough to entrust me with his CA Accord
(pop-up lights, not the fixed light version) years ago. It was a 2.0 fuel
injected model (others had a carburetted engine). Manual transmission and
it was also quite happy being in the high rpm region all day long.

Also... a CA3 2.0 Si uses a B20A engine. My prelude 2.0 Si also uses the
B20A. The occasional burst of speed will do nothing to a decently
maintained engine.

Wow, Machzero,

You really know Honda la, at least the prelude and accord for that years
of us. You are right, I just checked my registration card, my engine
number starts wth B20A...., and my CA3 is the "pop-up lights" type. But
only thing, is, my CA3 is a auto...

The B20A is a pretty strong engine. Mine's 17 years old already, still
pulls strongly, not a single leak. From what I recall from my manager's
car, the engine in mine is mounted in a slanted position, for the low hood,
therefore the headers and exhaust are all different, but it's the same
engine. Except, like you said, your is an auto, a lot more horsepower is
lost in the transmission.

Honda could have been overstating their facts, but their website puts the
B20A as having more horsepower and torque than the current civic 2.0 VTEC.

I still get 13 cents per litre (1.42 per litre) with mine, with heavy
driving, so I'm pretty damn happy.

The auto transmission will kick down or maintain the same gear under heavy
acceleration. You could ease off a bit, it might shift up, and let the
engine's superior torque do the accelerating.

Sorry for long respond time, having some problem with my laptop, which I
used to surf, now I am using my desktop, the laptop is hacked by someone,
the someone else will "type for me", and I can see his typing in this
screen when I replied your last post. haha, he is excellant la, can do
this.

FYI, I am always happy with my engine, except that my gear box, I think
it is dying liao, coz, sometimes, especially in the morning, the reverse
gear not responding one... and I can hear quite heavy "tuk" sound, when
the gear shifts from 1st to 2nd, especially during first 10 minutes the
car started in the morning, when it is hot liao, normally no problem.

My mechanic asked me to get ready for a change of gearbox anytime...

About the power, I can feel its torque at about 2500rpm, and it can
always run away from those fellow chasing me to my tail.. but there was
one time, the EG9... it is a manual one, vvvery fast over took me like
nothing... from then I realised how powerful can it be when a DOHC +
VTEC, even on a 1.6 engine.

Does your prelude comes with VTEC?

You did the basic maintainence for the gearbox already? Change the oil?
Sounds like it takes time to warm up, then it's okay. I'll check a prelude
repair manual later, the gearboxes should be somewhat similar.

No VTEC on mine, the same engine as yours. The B20A has torque down low,
maxxing out at about 4500rpm. It only loses out to a VTEC at the high end.
I did a sprint once with an Integra once, on a highway "onramp". I guess it
was a B16A VTEC with an automatic, cause I outpulled it. But you gotta
factor in weight and the transmission too. Your accord and my prelude weigh
the same, but a civic hatch is about 100-200kgs lighter.
