Tried to go through Kulim Grik bypass on 26/10/06 but was closed. Many
cars an even a Transnational bus being turned away by the security guard
there. According to him he can let us through but at Grik end it was
closed with cement blocks and no body to open it for us. Happily have to
detour back and it took me 11 half hours to reach Kuala Terengganu. Heavy
jam at Tanah Merah to Macang/Gua Musang intersection.

Lessons learned - next time do not travel during hari raya holidays. Too
many vehicles on the road, there are lorries too even though they were
banned from using it until 30/10.

the same thing happened to my bro.
he planned to take that bypass but the road was closed. i was also trapped
in the jam at Machang intersection. Took me two hours to travel 15km from
tanah merah kusial intersection to machang-kuala kerai intersection.

next year will travel at 12pm to try to avoid the inevitable jam at this
stretch!!!

Dear Ardenz,

Do not know why it takes so long to complete the by pass.

Anybody in JKR who knows about this route, why the delay etc...

there's no alternative at all to the "notorious" machang-tanah merah raya
jam. if u take the simpang pulai road you will get stuck in Gua Musang,
Kuala kerai and machang. if u take the grik route, you will get stuck in
bukit bunga, simpang tanah merah and machang interchange...

my plan next year is to travel at midnight on second raya day.

hope it will be much better.

just pray for the best.

By next year I think the Kulim/Grik bypass will be opened. However, the
bottle neck at Machang/Tanah Merah will be worse due to increase in
traffic volume.

If we were to detour to Simpang Pulai/Kuala Berang road for those going
to Kuala Terengganu, I think it will be better, but not sure whether the
highway will be opened or not. As to the time taken, well it may be
longer but smoother ride. I hope so!Cool

the slight reprieve we can hope for is that the interchage in machang, the
over head bridge will be opened during the raya rush. so the traffic from
KL to KB dont have to stop at machang traffic light, this will somehow help
the flow of northbound traffic ...

just hope for the best.

and i truly hoping for the kuala brang route will be opened by then so i
can totally avoid the machang jam....

Hi Ardenz

Had a horrible trip. My car suddenly loss power and engine will stall when
slow down have to floor acclerator and engine sound like motor boat. (By
the way I am driving an old trusty Wira Diesel). Experience this when
climbing up hill after army camp just beginning of east west highway.
Since it was a Friday and no mechanic available luckily manage to limp
back.
As to the bypass, it is still closed and according to Caltex station staff
there, it will be opened in January 2007.

Hi Mike,
As I know, the bypass should be opened for public in mid of 2006, which
was announced by MR Samy Vellu during press conference a year ago.

Hopefully it will be opened in Jan 2007. The bypass really shorten the
distance & reduce the travelling time from Baling to Grik.
