They have a right to ask you to pay as it is their property you damaged. Not sure if the insurance company will settle for you but maybe they might as they are required to pay 3rd party claims at a minimum.

A word of advice if you have an accident and hit a lamp post or some govt object. Be prepared for the police to ask you if you damaged anything else (if you did not hit another car or person) as if you say you hit a lamp post, they will fine you for damage to public property. Happened to my office boy long ago. We were testing a car and he lost control and dropped in a drain in Lake Gardens. The car was damaged so had to make a report for insurance. At the station, the policeman asked if he hit anything and he said he hit the barrier near the drain and the cop said that is govt property so he has to pay RM150!!!

insurance shud cover 3rd party liability .. that`s what we r paying for right ?....( in addition to covering damage to our own vehicle) ... must check must check...
in any case, get a personal liability insurance lah.. very cheap.

Actually it`s interesting that you mention that the insurance should also cover payments to govt or DBKL for damage to their property. But since the police are sooo busy, they have no time to write to the insurance company to collect so they take from you first. Maybe with a receipt, you can ask your insurance company to pay you back... which will happen 5 years later.

definitely confirmed. if u hit any of the highway
operators' property i.e. guardrail, lamp post, etc.
and they know u did it, saman letter will be sent to
your known address.

u have to pay the cost + 15% for my clerk's salary who
processed the documents to be sent to our lawyer's
office.

absolutely right Mr. Engineer, i've seen nothing less
than RM3k. reason being if the property is damaged,
there is no repair, everything must be replaced
especially guardrails. i guess it's the authorities'
regulations for safety reasons.

it can be claimed from your insurance. a friend of
mine lost control of his car and hit into a street
lamp near midvalley. the whole thing came down.
basically dbkl quoted him rm15k for the lamp post. but
it was passed on to the insurance company.
