Dear Fella Forumers,

I am writing to get advice and help from Sonata YF owners. This year, my Sonata is 4+ years. Starting from end of last year, the Carbon Emission sensors lighted up on the dashboard. The car was drivable. Hence I didn't bother much. This year, another sensor came up, which is the Air Bag sensor at around May'15. 2 sensors are lighting up now on my dashboard (See attach image).

Took it back to Hyundai SC, and they claim I need to have my service booklet. I am shock cause all this time, I have been servicing my car without bringing the service booklet. Even last time they changed my sun roof and engine mountings without any reference to the service booklet.

I am very disappointed because my car will be out of warranty by Jan next year (2016). Why advertise 5 year warranty when they don't even allow you to claim. Hyundai Sime Darby was not so strict last time, but now, it seems they are bad.

1. Their sensors don't last. Sensors are electronic parts, hence, how can servicing the car help maintain the sensor's quality? Bottom line, the sensors in the car are of lousy quality. I have driven Toyota cars for more than 10 years without any sensor light showing up in the dashboard.

2. The Hyundai Sime Darby web site is useless. You cannot even submit a complaint. There is a bug in the website.

3. Their customer care is not as efficient as last time. I am liaising with a girl called Sheila, but up till now, it is me calling the hot line 1300132000 but most of the time, no one picks up the phone. Sheila has not been all that helpful also and keep insisting that I have my booklet.

4.  Again I would like to reiterate, if sensors are spoiled, you need the service booklet to claim warranty?? Does the car service improve the life span of your sensors?

In fact, my car also has two window switches for the rear windows which can wind the window down but the switch cannot wind the window up. Hyundai Glenmarie SC says it is wear and tear. Hence, the quality of the Sonata YF does not match to my expectations for a Korean manufacturer and quality is much lower then its Japanese rivals.

I was thinking of writing directly to Sime Darby motors, to the highest level to complaint, or even to Hyundai Korea itself. What do you guys think? Any advice to offer?

Thanks.

On warranty issues, this type of thing always crops up. First is your car have to be serviced by them during the duration of the warranty period. Second please read the fine print on the warranty.

Like my wife's SUV, engine warranty is 5 years, but many other things are warranty 3 years only and then there are a whole lot of other things mostly wear and tear items that are warranty between 6 months to 1 year only.... :o
