Hello all.

I need some help and advise from you guys.

I am about to make a purchase of Peugeot 807 MPV, specifically is this one http://www.carlist.my/used-cars/2291533/2004-peugeot-807-2-0-auto-7-seats-2-power-door-on-the-road-mpv-.html

I have seen the car and i would say that it is in a very good condition despite its age.

However, its the 'unseen' parts that I am afraid of.

This is my first time buying continental cars. I have been using Japs/M'sian made cars all this while. So I have no knowledge and experience at all.

I have done some research and immediately notice that this car is equipped with AL4 gearbox that could bring a lot of problems to me. There are some workaround for it though as per advised by many in that thread.

This peugeot 807 has won my heart in term of

1. Safety  - top notch (8 airbags, 3 point seatbelts for all 7 seat) - very important as i travel with 3 small children

2. Comfort

3. Space

4. Price (kinda tight budget, so looking for around 30-40k only)

So... Here are the questions..

1. Should i buy it ? Or should I just walk away ?

2. If I could bring the car to any workshop for further inspection before I buy it, any good workshop/mechanic do you guys recommend ?

3. Any other 7 seater that can offer same level of comfort and safety?

Thankssss..

Hi, I am using a 2001 Fiat Ulysse 16V with AL4 GB. It shares the same engine with the 807.

Unless you are mechanically savvy or you have a reliable and competent Peugeot/Citroen workshop that you know for sure, I would say this AL4 GB is your biggest problem (and possibly nightmare).

I have not seen one myself, but I was told there are some good mechanics out there..... (am sure there is one Batu Caves area was told by a Pug user).

Other than that, its a Eurovan. Its really value for money. Its a nice drive with the family.

Eventually, I ended up, fixing my own car....... its Ok now. Mileage now is 165k km.

AL4 options:

Recond with 6 mths warranty = RM 6k - See note below on the parts changing.

Overhaul rebuilt with 1 week warranty = RM 4.5k - Even this the transmission specialist shop also change the worn parts only and not all as claimed.

Potong second hand unit = don't even think about it. Not all AL4 ar 100% the same, the gear ratios are different for a start for different cars.

New unit = depends on who is selling. Anything from 10K onwards (conservative figure).

The issue with this GB is the electronics that interfaces with the mechanical world. All the shops out there can fix the mechanical part of teh problem equation (eg, changing ATF, solenoids, overhaul, etc).

The part that is not accesible is the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). Software is locked & fixed - have not heard of anyone able to hack this. Operated in our Malaysia climate, and long afternoon traffic jams, thats the recipe to kill the solenoids and ATF prematurely. Not surprise that we get this parts failing < 50k for some < 100k.

The engine is ok. No probs. Part are cheap and readily available.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your car.
