What does the car manual recommends? 10w-60 seems a bit thick. I think Audi themselves are using Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 only.... smile_tongue.gif

Sifu's,
Im on the same boat and need some advice here. I just my 2011 Audi A4 1.8T. Some workshops are suggesting to use Liqui Moly 5W-30/5W-40. I am trying to read forums and looks like Liqui Moly and Petro Canada are good brands , but are they good to use for Malaysian weather? Have anyone tried Liqui Moly or Petro Canada. Please advice.

as mentioned by the workshop guy, they said, A5 have common problem in malaysia, which is engine problem. also he did mentioned as the oil spec is recommended by OPAL (warranty) to use this grade of oil. If new car with the AUDI warranty, yes the should use the 5w40. but here they recommend to use 10w60.

anyhow, will there be any effect using thicker oil of 10w60 compared to the original recommended 5w40.

1 more thing, if the main oil is 10w60, but then the interval 1000km added up of 500ml using 5w40, will there any damage to the engine? mixing up grade of oil.

I did some research and asking some good reputable mechanics, they asked me to stay away from Liqui Moly.
Audi Service Center are using Shell 5W-30 and for top up Shell 5W-40.

Or you can also try on Mobil 1 5W-30 which is also recommended. From the manuals i think they are recommending VW502 000 and next option is VW504 000.

You may check your manual, if you have.

I think there is no problem using the heavier oil but you may find the engine sluggish. I have tried 10w-60, 5w-50 and 5w-40 in my old school engine. the 60 felt heavier, however the 50 weight did not matter much against the 40 ones, but I have continued to use 40 as this grade is easier to find.... smile_tongue.gif

I don't think there's a need to go into viscosity explanation.
I don't know what u mean by using 10W60 due to problems. (Your Audi have problems that requires u to use 10W60 ?
But I can tell you the oil they recommended is good - LIQUIMOLY SYNTHOIL RACE TECH GT1 10W60 but do you need it?
I can tell you the oil they recommended to you is usually used for vehicles when they go for track racing.
I think your workshop is trying to sell you expensive oil which you do not need.
I also recommend full synthetic oil 5W30 or 5W40 (make sure they have either - VW502, VW504, VW505 best with ACEA standard.

All those API reading are definitely the old school readings and we should not be following that up. The latest oil reading we should using for Audi and VW is the VW504000, which has good readings for wear, sludge, piston deposits,...etc etc..
