Automatic Gear: The N And P Positions

Hope these questions are not too stupid to ask:
1) When do we use the N gear? When we stop for a short while like at the traffic lights, is it a must to use N, or just leave it in D? Some say in D better for the engine if just stop for a little while, is it correct?
2) What is the right time to engage P when parking, before or after pulling the handbrake? What about parking at slopes?
Thank you all!

Yes, if only for a while better leave in D. Shifting too often can also wear the linkages.
Depends on your driving. Normally should be after pulling handbrakes. If parking on steep slope you may want to turn your steering slightly, just in case even in an event the car runs it won't go down all the way....

if just stop sekejap like a few second just leave at D
but if long wait just put at N...no need to put at P...
P is for parking....it locks the transmission for parking especially at slope.....it doesnt really matter whether u pull the handbrake first or P the gear first...

By right, to really learn to drive must drive manual. After you can master manual, auto is a breeze. Learn to drive auto, sure cannot drive manual....

As parking at the slope, it is my practice to pull my handbrake first, let the car "rest", and then put to "P".. otherwise there will be a "thump" when I am shifting from "P"

whenever i stop (interchange/traffic light) always engage N
P is strictly for parking
and to engage D from P at traffic light is nuisance for people at the back watching reverse light coming ON while shifting from P to D and as well wasting time....
in traffic jam smal crawl maybe suits just let it D...but if got plenty of stop then just use accordingly N-D
engage P after or before pulling handbrakes doesnt really matter if done sequentially....slope or flat doesnt matter...because that was P designed to do for...locking the transmission to assist parking brake....

Why I drive wife's SUV, most of the time on steptronic so it will be a pain shifting it back to auto D then to N, so leave in 1....hahhahhahaha
