Its difficult for the human ear to accurately ascertain where the road noise is coming from, as most of these noises are low-freq rumbling, droning etc which are omni-directional. Based on my own testing on many diff cars with diff soundproffing done ( and Im not in the soundproofing industry), the biggest difference comes from changing to quieter tyres. The biggest bang for the buck. If you want to go further, then you can start installing noise control materials, and thats where your brains can start playing tricks with your perception.

The ONLY reliable, unbiased judge is another frequent driver of your car who doesnt know you've done any "sound proofing" on it. eg: your wife, girlfriend etc. That persn can also be an owner of exactly the same type of vehicle and doesnt know what you've done to your Mazda. This blind test can never tell lies.

After spending loads of money on soundproofing, casually get that partner to drive your car without mentioning anything about soundproofing. Its just another normal driving session. If he/she does not say "WOW! did you do something to our car?"....it simply means any "improvement" you hear is only in your mind, and even if there's a technical improvement (eg via decibel
meter etc), that "improvement" is not sufficient to trigger any awareness/immediate response on a person who doesnt know you done some soundproofing.
