Thanks for the information. My friend's Proton Wira 1.5 manual surprisingly didn't encounter any gearbox problem even though it's 13 years old, though the driver is a very careful one, now in his 60's.
Current car is Nissan Sylphy with CVT gear. Most likely will sell it off next year. ALl this automatic gearbox failure or replacement that needs a big chunk of money is freaking me out. Though I presume all vehicles with automatic gear transmission will be affected. The more complicated the automatic gearbox the costlier the repair or replacement will be.

I drove an old Proton Saga Aeroback (magma engine) manual gearbox last time. 15-20 years old, only change clutch plate and cable once. Just service gearbox oil every 40k-60k km (forgot). Never have any other problem related to g/b.
I also drove Proton Wira 1.5 manual for many years. Always need to use clutch since stuck in KL city centre traffic jam daily. No problem, never change anything. Maybe service gearbox oil once only. Even when want to sell and bring to 2nd hand car dealer, they test drive also admit the clutch plate still ok, did not try cut my throat. But I very rare rev >4k rpm. Normally 2-3k rpm only.
I still can accept a manual transmission car, but not heavy-clutch lah.
