I own a Ranger which I'm planning on driving into the ground so the resale value was never an issue. I've been thinking of selling my other car and been looking around at alternatives. One that crossed my mind was a Focus. They are incredibly popular in the UK but are very rare in Malaysia.

As an expat, I don't know the history of Ford in Malaysia but I've read that Ford pulled out of Malaysia sometime in the past.

Is that why Fords aren't more popular?

The resale value on Focuses is low, which makes them good second hand cars IMO but are there issues with spare parts or anything I should know about Ford Malaysia before I take my interest in the Focus any further?

Roo, you can also peruse this other thread in FoMEC: http://fomec.org/smf...icseen#msg67551

Spare parts cost: Comparable to a certain French marque I use to own but much much higher than my 2002 Toyota Altis.
Reliability: As good as Japanese. The Lynx/Laser is Japanese.
Service centres: Several in Klang Valley. There are also other Ford/ Mazda specialists. I can PM you one contact if you like.
Resale value: You know the story.

The last generation Lynx and Focus is still ok to buy. Not too old and spare parts support (used and new) is still good. Forget the Focus MKI -difficult to get parts. Like any other used car, it is always better if you know the owner and/or the service record.

Thanks. So why do you think Ford is such a small brand here?

For the answer you will have to go back all the way to 1985 with the launch of Proton and several years later, Perodua. The competition from the national cars is adversarial. So many brands just died and some became semi-dead. One by one they disappeared from our shores. Mazda, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, VW and etc. Ford remain but have to contend with selling more commercial vehicles than passenger cars. Ford (the Principal) left Malaysia for Thailand a few years ago and the importation and distribution of Ford vehicles is left to Sime Darby.

It is only many years later that some of the brands that left made a comeback due to the more friendly car policies in compliance with the various free trade agreements.

But throughout the difficult times three brands really stayed to fight it out. From selling a thousand units a month they were down to selling a couple of hundreds. They are Toyota, Honda and Nissan. Today they are reaping the rewards of their perseverance. Mercedes is the other brand but it competes in the niche luxury segment.

I have made a post on another thread and commented if Ford in Malaysia can regain their former glory. Their current range of cars and trucks are good and competitively priced. Their worldwide sales numbers are testimony to this. The Fiesta and Ranger are the brand's comeback trailblazers. The Focus is becoming more visible. They should improve from now on.
