The plate is found on the engine firewall. Newer cars some have the number on the passenger side front windscreen bottom...

VIN can also be found on the car reg paper under "no casis"
However the statement that VIN equals chassis no is not 100% accurate. This can vary with models and year of make but for some the chassis is incorporated in the VIN. The VIN can give more than chassis, it can also gives the transmission type, place of manufacture, car color, body style etc
For example
Volvo VIN - last 6 digit is the chassis no.
MB VIN - digit 12-17 is the chassis no.
From what I gather it's usually the last 6-5 digits on the VIN. And I think incorporating chassis into VIN is an industry standard for the last 20 yrs or so?
I think the confusion with chassis and VIN is historical. Initially cars had just chassis no. And our reg card never updated to the VIN system - still using the chassis term.
