By the time our cars have been some years on our Malaysian roads with their uneven surfaces, potholes, slow-you-down stretches,etc.... the car would have aged bones to become rickety boneshakers. Many Malaysian roads are left in their condition so that you have to buy shock-absorbers and get your car serviced more often. This appears to be the authorities way of making more business for car repairers.

How do you deal with creaks and groans from rickety old cars more than 10 years service?
What do you look for after changing your car shock-absorbers and still find jolts and sways from your car?
Any boneshaker stories to share?

well...first to differentiate from hard jolt of stiff suspension and walloping sampan movement of failed suspension....

swaying is the sign of failed suspension (or in case of most perodua car lack of handling supporting part such as anti-roll bar)

as metal fatigue also plays major role helping in chasis crack in some spot, UR bars such as fender bar and 4point/3point strut bar does help a lot to strengthen back the weaken chasis area.... (2point strut bar was almost next to useless)

as per interior plastic part squeak mostly due to broken clips etc etc....so major replacement of plastic panel needed and that also didn't guaranteed to work 100%....

as supporting part autofoam also did a fair share helping reduce the squeaks from chasis flex....

as for my 16yo car with aftermarket suspension+fender bar...4part still in waiting list...
1)front nosecut replacement (due to crack at crossmember bolt area)
2)4point front strut bar
3)autofoam track package (door sill strengthen)
4)antiroll bar drop link retrofitting

just to share experience with my family's kelisa year 2003, already clocked almost 190,000 kilometers smile_tongue.gif

so far the only major replacement were :

1) all 4 shock absorbers

2) engine mounting

3) clutch plate

can't remember when for no 1 but for no 2 & 3, it happened last year.

before it happened, the engine were vibrating more than usual for few months.

other than that right now, only annoying squeak from the aging car seats.

'future plan' IF my family plan to keep the car :

1) engine overhaul

2) replace car seats

3) repaint

4) downgrade tyre from 14" back to 13" for thicker profile

5) replace springs or shocks perhaps

6) auto foaming !!!

7) sound proofing !!!
