I've been driving with the mirror this way for 10 years since parking only constitute a small percentage of total journey time.
The disadvantage of course comes when parking as the side mirror often helps but once gotten used to, parking should not be a problem except for hard spots or near road kerbs that can scratch the bottom side of the car or bumper.
I wonder if automobile makers haven't thought of making side mirrors with two modes: Driving & Parking
Driving - as per SAE paper and youtube video.
Parking - as per how we normally adjust it so as to see the pillars and kerb
All is needed is adjust mirror, memorize driving mode (like radio stations). Then adjust again and memorize parking mode. When in D mirrors adjust to driving mode. When in R or with a press of a button (for front and side parking), it switches perspective to parking mode.
Multiply the memory bank by 2 or 3 for additional drivers (wife, children, etc)

Already exists in VW Golf and some other cars
Leave the side-mirror knob at L.
When switch to R, the mirror will auto-tilt to the preset.
When switch to D and move >20km/h, it will auto-tile back to default.
Only for the left-side-mirror.
